Michigan State Alumni Email Accounts At Risk

Michigan State University alumni who have not registered for classes for more than two years were notified their ‘@msu.edu’ email accounts will be deactivated. The alumni accounts set to be deactivated have until the end of August to transfer their emails.

Originally, the notification stated these accounts and storage files would expire on June 26. After receiving large amounts of negative feedback, a second email was sent the same day, apologizing for the short notice and extending the deactivation date to August 31.

The university is currently looking into alternative options. The deactivation is set for August 31 until further notice.

Joe Wald: A True Humanitarian, Successful Businessman, and Admired MSU Professor

Joe Wald is not only admired by students at Michigan State taking his courses in public relations and advertising, but is well-known by the larger community by contributing his efforts to the Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) and Sparrow Hospital. Joe has been working with the Greater Lansing Food Bank for about a year as the Executive Director, and has managed to promote it successfully. He graciously sat down with us to talk about his work, giving helpful tips about marketing, public relations, business, non-profits, and becoming an active volunteer.

Social Media According to Scott Westerman

The Lansing community is packed full of experienced individuals who are very versed in the areas of marketing, advertising, and public relations. One of those individuals is Scott Westerman, President of the Michigan State University Alumni Association (MSUAA).

We sat down with Scott, and he gave us the in and outs of social media. Enjoy!

Getting into Social Media for the Individual.

“Press Rewind”

Scott’s biggest advice for individuals thinking about getting into social media was to, “Press the rewind button”. Scott talks about how you need to go back and look at what you were posting since the start of your accounts. Take down what you don’t want associated with your personal brand. Scott says nothing is secret on the internet anymore. Everything is available directly or indirectly.

“Your Personal Brand”

Scott then goes on to talk about “Your Personal Brand”. Scott suggests that everything you do online expresses your personal brand. You never stop expressing with whatever you’re doing. Scott says to make sure your watching your language and don’t get carried away with what you’re doing online. He says that all of us are our own company, selling a product (ourselves) so we need to make sure we’re thinking strategically.

“Whether we like it or not, we all have a personal brand we express everyday. We’re constantly defining it, and refining it.”

So the real question becomes, what can I do to make my company more relevant for the smartphone user. Professional Spotlight: David Regan

Allow me to introduce you to David Regan, a modern-day renaissance man in the world of advertising.  He has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The Detroit News, and ABC TV regarding his understanding of the advertising industry, not to mention his numerous ADDYs, TELLYs, DMADs, and CADDs awards (as well as serving as a judge for the Crystal Awards).  Impressive vitae, oui?

Before becoming an instructor at Michigan State University in 1995, Regan worked full-time at J. Walter Thompson, the world’s largest and best-known marketing communications brand.  Regan’s experiences include working with such clients as General Motors, Black & Decker, Gillette, A & W Restaurants, Harley-Davidson, State Farm, Caterpillar, Windsor Foods, 3M, Heinz, Ford, White Castle, HAP Health Care, and Republic Banks throughout his 20 years in the industry.  We here at LSJ Media are pretty impressed with Dave.
